How to: Create Your Own Mood Board in Canva
A mood board doesn't need to be some elaborate and time consuming process. You can create one in under 20 minutes using this tutorial.
In this video tutorial, I walk you through how to create your own mood board in Canva – a free online design software.
Here's how to do it:
Open the Canva Dashboard (you will have to create an account if you don't have one already!)
Click on the teal button that says "Create a Design" and choose Instagram Post. This creates a canvas that is the perfect size for a post on Instagram.
Once you're in the editor looking at your canvas, click on Elements on the left hand side. In the search bar, type "grid." Find the 3x3 grid.
Drag the grid onto your canvas. Resize it so it doesn't take up the whole page. To keep the dimensions proportional to each other, hold the shift key while you resize. Center the grid. Increase the spacing between the squares.
After you have your grid in place, click on elements again and this time, search "square." Click on the square. Resize it so it fits underneath your grid at the bottom. Duplicate it so that you have five of the same size squares lined up at the bottom. You'll want to make sure they are evenly spaces so highlight all of the squares and click on "position" in the top right. Space evenly horizontally.
Now that your layout is all set, upload the images you want to use in your mood board. Click "Uploads" and then "Upload an Image or Video". Drag your images to the squares.
Once you've added all of your photos and you're ready to create your colour palette, click on the first square under the grid. Then, click on the colour palette, scroll down and you'll see "Photo Colours." Click "See All." Then choose a colour that is found in one of your photos. Click on the next square and repeat.
Once you're finished, you'll have a full mood board.
It's really quite that simple! No need to make things harder than they need to be. The mood board sets the tone for the rest of your brand.
